Urban Flea Market Adventure: Philadelphia Flea

phila-flea market items

Philadelphia Flea Markets has been putting on an impressive series of markets in various locations around the city since 1987. The market we attended was located at 9th & Spring Garden Street (820 Spring Garden Street), just a few blocks north of the Vine Street Expressway  (Route 676). This easy to find location is housed in and around an old FedEx shipping depot. The building is also convenient for vendors, they’re able to drive their vehicles right inside and park behind their selling spaces.

Artful arrangement of goods by Ralph and Mandi

Weather permitting there are vendors outside in the surrounding parking lot. The market offers an incredible variety of goods. The day we were selling there was vintage, industrial, mid century modern, several vintage clothing vendors as well as antiques and collectibles. There is even a food truck and and area to sit and eat. Another handy feature of this market was an ATM inside in case you need more cash! I appreciated that there was a ladies restroom and not a port-a-potty, YAY!

Fun and funky finds from Princess Pea Parlor

Although some vendors said it was a quiet day at the market there seemed to be a steady stream of shoppers. The vendors were friendly and willing to chat and share information about their wares. There were some pretty amazing things and the prices were good. Several shoppers stopped by our table and commented on how much they like this particular flea market and always find things they can afford!  We really enjoyed meeting the shoppers and the other vendors. Especially the other “Newbies” to the market like ourselves. Such clever ideas and the great displays really inspired us!

We had a nice chat with the couple behind Painted Karma, who were busy selling their painted furniture  (see photo above) If you want to see more of their clever ideas and work they are on Instagram @painted_karma. Another couple selling for the first time at the flea market were the folks behind Princess Pea Parlor. Their booth was such a cool vintage setup, it was just like stepping into a living room from the 1950’s, complete with a groovy electric fireplace, lounge chair, rug and lamps. You can find more of their vintage goods on Etsy.

If you are looking for mid-century or vintage furniture this market will not disappoint. 2 other vendors I chatted with had some incredible pieces. I was drooling over the orange fireplace and the Herman Miller bar and barstools set I spotted.
