Exploring York, PA Thrift Stores

Tour de Thrift travelled to York, PA  to explore a few of the thrift stores we’ve heard about. York is in south central Pennsylvania, not far from Gettysburg, Hershey and Harrisburg.  A few fun facts about York, is it was the original home of the York Peppermint Patty. Harley-Davidson Motorcycles has a factory located here as does York Barbell Company. The U.S.A. Weightlifting Museum Hall of Fame is located here. We managed to visit 4 thrift stores in York and the visitors center. Next time we head to town we hope to stop in the Central Market, we heard its the place to go for delicious eats. The Central Market provides fresh local foods, produce and artisan crafted products Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in a beautiful historic brick building at the corner of Philadelphia and North Beaver Streets. I look forward to checking it out on our next visit.

Salvation Army Thrift Store

Our first stop was the Salvation Army Thrift store east of downtown York. Located in the Haines Acres shopping center this large Salvation Army has plenty of parking. The store seemed quiet when we were there on a saturday morning, and the inventory on the shelves was a bit sparse (maybe donations are down in the winter?). They did have a fun collection of old Samsonite suite cases, which was tempting but I passed. My husband found a pair of stereo speakers that were affordable, but much of the furniture we looked at seemed to be priced very high. They did have a large inventory of clothing and a lot of winter wear which was good since the weather outside is arctic!

The Junior League of York thrift store has been serving the community from a charming historic building since 1962. The shop was clean and well-organized, with clothing arranged by size (yay!). The clothing was in good condition and I spotted some really nice brands. My husband scored a nice pair of Levi Jeans! Be sure to check out their Facebook page and website so you’ll know about the specials they run, like the seasonal clearance sales in the spring and fall. There was a nice selection of accessories, jewelry and the children’s section looked like a lot of fun. Theres not a lot of housewares and no furniture. The folks working there are super nice and happy to help. This shop will be a definite “re-visit” for clothing and accessories!

Just a few blocks west of the Junior League Thrift Store we stopped at the York Rescue Mission Economy Store. Housed in a wonderful old department store building, this place was bustling with shoppers. The first floor has a mix of discounted grocery type items with clothing, shoes and accessories. The second floor has several rooms, filled with housewares, records, vintage and antique items, furniture and electronics.There is a lot of inventory to pick through, and most everything I saw was clearly priced. The folks working there were happy to chat about the store and offer assistance.  I found a really cute set of vintage plastic coasters that had to come home with me.

 Our last thrift store stop on our loop through York, PA was Goodwill. Although this store seemed small in comparison to the Rescue Mission Economy Store, it was filled to the brim with inventory! The clothing section is not organized by size which makes me a little crazy, so I headed over to check out the tons of purses and bags. The housewares section had some fun items and I found a really nice set of 1950’s vintage Kilgore Shel-Glo plastic cups & dishes which match the coasters I found at the Mission store! These dishes will be a nice addition to the vintage picnic basket I’ll be selling at the next Phila. Flea Market.

All in all it was a good day exploring a new area and some new thrift stores, I’ll be looking forward to re-visiting York, PA in the next few months. And as always be sure to leave a comment if you’d like to recommend some new places for us ti visit.
