Exploring Duncannon & Newport, PA

After being laid up for over a month, fighting a nasty cold and a herniated disc, I was thrilled to finally be out and about exploring local thrift stores and indoor flea markets. Saturday had sub-zero temps but a bright blue sky. Perfect for a drive into the surrounding countryside, to explore some of our favorite indoor group shops in Duncannon  and a Goodwill store in Newport, PA.

Before we crossed the mighty Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, we stopped for a healthy, yummy lunch at one of our favorite downtown places, Crave & Co. We love their food and always have fun chatting with the folks there.

Once over the river we headed North on Route 11, up through Enola and Marysville to Duncannon, PA. We often stop at a little resale shop called Mac’s. This visit we noticed his inventory and shop had changed and grown. Then we continued driving north and made stops at two large group shops, The Cove Barn and The Old Sled Works, that we’ve visited before, (I haven’t written about the Sled Works yet, but hope to do a post soon.) Both of these places are large and could take hours to browse, but we wanted to head to a thrift store that we’ve never been to before so we didn’t linger.

We continued north on Route 11 and soon came to the intersection for Route 849 (Newport Road) where we turned left and started a windy uphill drive. Within minutes we were out in the rolling snow-covered  fields and farmland of central PA. It was a nice scenic 15 minute ride to get to Newport, PA.

Once in town we turned left onto 2nd Street – which seemed to be the major intersection and town square for Newport. The Goodwill Store was on the first block and there was plenty of on street parking. The store is located in an old store front building, it had quite a few shoppers  and was filled with more inventory than I expected. I managed to find a nice little wooden candleholder to add to my collection for 97 cents – score!

If you happen to be in the Newport area, the Goodwill is worth a quick visit. There was a cafe and health food store located on the next block, as well as a gift and antique shop called the Carpetbagger. We also spotted the Perry County Council on the Arts gallery that looked really interesting. Hopefully, we’ll head back during the warmer months, to have a nice walk around town and explore the area a bit more.

If you go let us know what you find…Happy Thrifting!
