Tucked up against a tree covered hillside, in the western part of Connecticut, is a wonderful flea market called the Elephant’s Trunk. The market started back in 1976 and has continued to grow in size and popularity ever since.
Covering 55 acres there’s ample free parking, grass-covered fields for vendors and gravel pathways for shoppers. I’ve heard about this market and have even seen it on TV, during episodes of Market Warriors and Flea Market Flip. So I’ve been hoping to visit for quite sometime. Lucky for me we have family that lives nearby. On a recent visit we all got up early and headed to the flea. The day was sunny and hot, which made the shade trees, scattered throughout the grounds, very welcome and the lemonade stand very busy. If you’re hungry, there’s a variety of other food trucks and stands to choose from.
The friendly dealers and the interesting variety of goods for sale made this market fun to visit. We walked every aisle and were impressed by how many vendors had nicely arranged booths, were willing to chat and of course haggle over their prices. For the quality and variety of goods being sold, and considering the location, I thought the prices would be higher and that we wouldn’t be able to afford much, but that was definitely not the case.
This is not a flea market that allows mass-produced, knock-off imports and you won’t be able to find packs of tube socks (thank god!), but you will find a good blend of antiques, vintage, industrial, ephemera, garden furniture, plants and some new and hand-made items. Not everyone selling here is a professional dealer so don’t think this is a snooty antique market. We found the Elephant’s Trunk flea market a great place to shop, take photos, see some neat vintage and antique goods. If you’re ever in the area give it a try and let us know what you think.
I hope we can make it back for another visit before the end of the season!
