Searching for a Mid-Century Modern Style Credenza
We are searching for a mid-century modern or danish style credenza, also called a sideboard or buffet. Something we can put our monitor and turntable on top of and store our stereo equipment inside.
Something like this from Vintage Danish Modern would be perfect! Vintage Danish Modern carries some amazing inventory, they bring containers of furniture over from Europe and have top designer pieces. I love looking at the new arrivals when I get their emails. Talk about a dream job! It must be very cool to be a buyer for these folks. Someday, I’d love to hear about how they find their furniture and ship it to their Maine and Oregon locations.
Or what about something like this?
Another place with a beautiful selection of mid-century modern style credenza’s is Furnish Me Vintage in Florida. I love the selection of credenza’s on this site. This stunning Hans Wegner “Presidential” credenza is $4950.00! A little out of our reach.
Of course we are looking for a bargain and we’re on a budget ($300 or less) so this may take a while. Also, since we want to store stereo equipment inside we will need a way to have the wires and cables come out of the back. I can’t see drilling holes in the back of a expensive piece of furniture, so we’ll be looking for something that needs a little love.
So our search continues and it provides us with a great excuse to expand our shopping beyond thrift stores and flea markets to include second hand furniture stores. One of the first we’ve visited was GRQ Used Furniture in Kutztown, PA. I saw their listing on Craig’s List and we decided to drive over one saturday and check them out.

With over 40,000 square feet of furniture and accessories to browse through we thought we’d have a chance of finding our credenza. There was so much to look at thought, it was easy to get distracted.
GRQ has many of the top mid century names in their inventory like Knoll, Broyhill, Drexel, Ethan Allen, Heywood Wakefield, and Lane.
From a retail perspective their prices seem really reasonable. I saw several chairs that at $45 seemed like a bargain, but I was trying to stay focused on the credenza, so I had to leave them there.
There are rows and rows of furniture most of which is in very nice condition. Every possible style, size and color.
GRQ has a website and also sells their furniture one eBay, Craigslist, Facebook – you can get a good idea of the inventory they have by visiting their websites, but it really is worth a trip if you are looking for something specific.
Unfortunately we didn’t find our mid-century modern credenza the day we visited but we’ll stop by again as their inventory changes frequently.
