More than Tools at Liberty Tool Company in Liberty, Maine
Last year at this time we were living on the mid-coast of Maine. The winters in Maine can seem endlessly long.
Folks can get a bit stir crazy, especially if you love going to yard sales or flea markets. Sine the next yard sale will be months away, the next best thing to do is bundle up, head out into the cold, snowy weather and visit a second-hand, thrift or antique shop.
During one of these mid-winter outings we visited the Liberty Tool Company in Liberty, Maine. Liberty Tool is an institution on the mid-coast of Maine and beyond. There are 3 locations and a museum associated with Liberty Tool and the primary mission is to collect and preserve usable woodworking tools. There’s a great article on Woodworkers Guide if you would like to learn more about the tools and museum.

Although we (actually only my husband), love looking at old tools, during this visit we focused on the 3 floors of vintage and antique goods. It was a cold winter saturday morning and the wood stove was putting out some nice heat while we looked around the first floor.
Upstairs there was ephemera galore and rows of books. If you don’t mind a hodge-podge of stuff, which we don’t, its great fun to pick through the rooms for vintage treasures.
We came away with a really nice Technics turntable which has since been fixed up and gone off to a new home. Looking at wonderful old rusty things is a great way to spend a winter day.
Of course Liberty Tool company would be wonderful in the summer as well. If you go make sure to also visit the Gas Station across the street, there’s more stuff in there.
But if you can’t get to Maine anytime soon, they also sell online and you can see what’s going on in the store by watching their webcam.
