Fun at Montsweag Flea Market

We had a great time at the Montsweag Flea Market over July 4th weekend.
Preparing for the market was exhausting and getting up at 5:30 am to drive an hour was not my favorite thing to do on a Sunday, but it was well worth the effort.

The Montsweag Flea Market is located on Route 1 just a few miles north of Bath, Maine. The tables are $10 for an eight foot table, we were feeling confident and rented 2. We needed a small u-haul trailer to fit our things. So right off the bat we needed to clear about $50. We pulled into the market around 7:30am, obviously the last ones there, as everyone else was already set up and selling. It wasn’t very crowded though, so we were a bit worried we wouldn’t make any money

We started frantically setting up as several people stood-by and watched us unpack to see what we had. It was fast and furious in the first hour and then eased off quite a bit. I sold many of my favorite things to a really nice couple within the first few moments of our setting up. They seemed really excited about the things they bought from us. I’m happy to see our things go to people who will appreciate and enjoy them…as corny as that sounds, it’s true.

The other sellers at the market were very nice, and had some great stuff. We were lucky and had some really cool folks next to us. Marna, from Half Pond Antiques Vintage & Antique Photography, was so knowledgeable and fun to chat with, she had some great pieces. Wonderful images!

Her friend Peter from Offshore Salvage also had some truly cool and unique things. They both sell at some other permanent antique markets which I want to check out, next time I head to that part of Maine.
Cornish Trading Company – 19 Main Street, Cornish, ME 04020  (207) 625-8387
Cattail Farm Antiques – 1784 Post Road, Wells, Maine 0409   (207) 646-1499

Peter told me that the biggest antique fair in Maine happens to be in the town we now live in, Union, Maine, August 12-14, 2011. It looks really good, so we will definitely check it out. http://www.maineantiquefest.com/

By early afternoon it started to rain and there were fewer shoppers, we had sold over $500.00! so we decided to pack up and head home. Not sure how often we will be doing the flea market thing in the future, but we learned a lot and had a great time. If you are in Maine, Montsweag Flea Market is worth a visit.

I’m looking forward to checking out some of the other antique and vintage sales and markets in our new area. I’ll be sure to post about them when I do.
