Keeping it Local: The HBG Flea
One of the things we love about our new neighborhood in midtown Harrisburg, is the walkability. We can walk to restaurants, shops and now, the Harrisburg Flea Market! If you’ve been reading this blog, you know we love going to thrift stores, flea markets and alternative shopping venues (i.e. indie craft fairs, junks shops, yard sales, etc.). So when we heard about the HBG Flea we knew we had to go.
The HBG Flea

The HBG Flea is housed in the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center (HMAC), in the ballroom on the second floor (there’s an elevator). The space has soaring old windows that drench the space with bright daylight. There’s a stage at the front of the ballroom and sometimes there’s live music while you shop.
It’s nice to see a good mix of vendors and items being sold. We’ve found lots of affordable hand-made and vintage goods. Many of the vendors are local area creative business folks, some just getting started, others a bit more established. It’s great to be able to help support and foster their creative endeavors, whenever possible.
Meghan Jones and Mary Imgrund, the creative friends and co-founders of the HBG flea, not only support local artists by organizing the monthly flea market, but also local charities. Every month the flea provides outreach for a local charity, which benefits from donations made at the market. Both Meghan and Mary are champions for all that Harrisburg has to offer, and advocates for building a better community. We really admire their energy and enthusiasm. Read more about their mission on their website http://www.hbgflea.com/.
A nice selection of succulent plants, creative sculptures, vintage clothing, artisan creations, vinyl records, furniture, and collectibles are just a few of the things you can shop for at the market.
There’s original designs on paper products, organic lotions, candles, clothing and jewelry. Don’t forget about the food! The fudge was yummy and the gluten free baked goods were another of my favorites.
There are usually over 40 friendly, creative vendors to choose from, while shopping at the market. We found everyone easy to chat with about what they were selling. There’s a a nice community feeling here and the mood is upbeat and fun.
The HGB flea is held the first saturday of every month. There are plans to move the market outside, beginning in May for the summer months. We will definitely be regulars at this market, and will most likely be posting more about it here in the future. Find out about upcoming markets and check out the vendor list on the website or Facebook page.
Mark your calendar now, the next HBG Flea is Saturday, March 12, 2016 (due to another event at the venue). If you want to make a day of it, we suggest having a late breakfast or early lunch at one of several good places in midtown before heading to the flea. You can grab food on the first floor of the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center (HMAC), where the market is held, or visit the Yellowbird Cafe or the Broad Street Market just up 3rd street. All have yummy choices at affordable prices. There’s even the new Susquehanna Art Museum a block away, so come visit midtown Harrisburg during the first Saturday of the month, help support the HBG Flea, the creative community and a local charity. We’re sure you’ll have a good time!
SPECIAL NOTE: Please share this post with anyone who may be interested in visiting the Flea or with someone who may want to write about the HBG Flea on a blog or on other media outlets, we’re trying to help The HBG Flea spread the word. This is a new flea market and we really want to help it grow and prosper. For more information contact The HBG Flea.
Thanks and hope to see you there!
